About Featured Expert: Sensirion

Sensirion are global industry experts in environmental sensing, gas and liquid flow measurement, differential-pressure sensing and integrated digital sensor technologies. The company designs, develops and manufactures microsensors and sensor systems for the measurement of humidity, temperature, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, formaldehyde, oxygen, hydrogen and refrigerant gases. Its wider product portfolio also includes gas and liquid flow sensors, differential-pressure sensors, mass flow controllers and gas-metering solutions for industrial, medical, automotive, building-automation and consumer applications.

A central element of Sensirion’s technology base is its proprietary CMOSens architecture, which combines MEMS sensing elements with analog and digital signal-processing capabilities on a single semiconductor chip. This integration allows calibration data, temperature compensation and digital communications to be incorporated directly within the sensor itself, supporting compact designs and repeatable performance within high-volume equipment applications.

Sensirion - Featured Expert Logo - Sensors + Testing MonthlySensirion’s humidity and temperature sensors apply this architecture across a variety of applications ranging from HVAC and indoor-air-quality systems to industrial equipment, appliances, automotive electronics and medical devices. Individual devices are calibrated and tested during manufacture, while different product families address requirements specific to sensor accuracy, response time, package size, operating environment and interface configurations.

In addition, the company’s environmental-sensing portfolio extends beyond temperature and humidity. Carbon-dioxide, particulate-matter, VOC, NOx and formaldehyde sensors can be used individually or within multiparameter modules to provide a broader assessment of indoor-air quality and environmental conditions. These technologies support demand-controlled ventilation, air purification, appliance control, automotive cabin monitoring and other systems where multiple measurement parameters must be considered together as part of a larger system.

Flow measurement represents another major area of Sensirion expertise. Its MEMS-based calorimetric gas-flow sensors provide calibrated and temperature-compensated measurement capabilities, including bidirectional flow detection in selected product families. Applications include medical ventilation, respiratory equipment, anesthesia systems, gas mixing, industrial process equipment and analytical instrumentation.

Sensirion’s liquid-flow sensors extend thermal microsensor technology into the measurement of low and ultralow liquid flow rates. Product ranges cover applications ranging from hundreds of milliliters per minute down to single-digit nanoliters per minute, supporting diagnostics, laboratory automation, drug delivery, biotechnology, analytical equipment and precision-dispensing processes. Differential-pressure sensors are also available for airflow measurement, filter monitoring, medical devices and other low-pressure applications.

Across these product families, Sensirion develops both standard off-the-shelf sensors for high-volume integration and application-specific solutions for equipment manufacturers. Evaluation hardware, software tools and applications-engineering support allow sensor performance, communications and operating parameters to be assessed during system development.

Founded in 1998 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich, Sensirion is headquartered in Stäfa, Switzerland, and supports customers through operations across Europe, North America and Asia. To learn more about Sensirion and its sensor technologies, please click here.
