Boeing, Lufthansa and Rolls-Royce, global industry experts in aircraft manufacturing, airline operations and propulsion technologies, respectively, will conduct a collaborative flight test campaign to evaluate aircraft fuel-efficiency and noise-reduction technologies. The testing will use a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner serving as the 2026 Boeing ecoDemonstrator Explorer and will support Phase III of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise program. The flight test aircraft is scheduled to be delivered to Lufthansa following the program and is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. Testing will be conducted from Boeing’s facility in Glasgow, Montana, and is expected to continue through mid-August.

The campaign will evaluate a reduced-length engine inlet demonstrator known as the Next Generation Inlet. The technology incorporates advanced acoustic treatments and is being developed to support the integration of more fuel-efficient engines onto future aircraft platforms. Shortening the inlet could help reduce nacelle weight and aerodynamic drag, although the design must also preserve the acoustic performance required to control engine noise. The inlet incorporates an expanded acoustic liner covering more of its internal surface. This treatment is intended to compensate for acoustic area that can be lost when the length of an engine inlet is reduced. The flight test campaign will allow the partners to evaluate the inlet’s aerodynamic and acoustic performance with the technology installed on a Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine.

Boeing 787-9 ecoDemonstrator Explorer flight test aircraft featured by Sensors + Testing Monthly

The 2026 Boeing ecoDemonstrator Explorer is a Boeing 787-9 destined for Lufthansa and powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. The aircraft will support flight testing of a reduced-length engine inlet and operational concepts designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce community noise.

Rolls-Royce has provided engineering support and oversight for operating the engine with the Next Generation Inlet installed. The flight campaign builds on earlier work conducted under Phase II of the FAA CLEEN program, when Rolls-Royce evaluated a previous version of the inlet at its ground test facility in Stennis, Mississippi, and aboard its Boeing 747 Flying Test Bed. The partners will also evaluate modified departure and arrival procedures, including Intelligent Operations flight paths designed to identify potential fuel-efficiency and community noise benefits. The flight paths are generated algorithmically using multiple data sources and are intended to operate within existing aircraft capabilities and air traffic control requirements.

Potential operating techniques include higher altitude constraints and continuous descent arrivals. The flight tests will help the partners evaluate how these procedures perform within an operational environment and whether they could reduce fuel consumption or community noise during aircraft departures and approaches.

Boeing is leading the development and integration of the technologies under test and is providing the personnel and infrastructure required to conduct the flight campaign. Lufthansa is making its future fleet aircraft available for the program, while Rolls-Royce is supporting the installation and operation of the modified inlet on its Trent 1000 engine.

The Boeing 787-9 and Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines were selected to maintain continuity with earlier inlet testing performed by Rolls-Royce. Using a full-scale aircraft and engine will allow the partners to examine the technologies under operational flight conditions.

The innovations form part of Phase III of the FAA CLEEN program, a public-private partnership that supports the development and testing of aircraft and engine technologies intended to reduce fuel consumption, emissions and noise. The program uses industry cost sharing to advance technologies through ground or flight demonstrations and move them closer to possible integration into current and future aircraft.

“These tests demonstrate how the public-private partnership of the CLEEN program supports the development and integration of advanced technologies into current and future aircraft,” said Julie Marks, executive director of the FAA’s Office of Environment and Energy.

Boeing launched the ecoDemonstrator program in 2012 to move emerging technologies out of laboratory environments and evaluate them aboard flying test beds. The program has tested more than 260 technologies associated with aviation safety, fuel consumption, emissions, noise, operational efficiency and the passenger experience.
