Five AI, the UK-based artificial intelligence and automated vehicle technology company wholly owned by Bosch, has announced plans to develop new photorealistic simulation technology designed to accelerate the testing and validation of advanced driver assistance and autonomous vehicle systems. Developed in Cambridge, UK, the new simulation technology will combine Gaussian scene reconstruction with generative AI techniques to create highly realistic digital representations of real-world driving environments. Five AI has secured UK Government funding through the CAM Pathfinder programme to support development of the technology, building upon simulation software that the company has developed and used with automotive manufacturers since 2015.

Five AI is developing photorealistic simulation technology that uses real-world scene reconstruction and generative AI to support testing and validation of advanced automated driving systems.

Gaussian scene reconstruction converts imagery captured from physical environments into photorealistic 3D representations that can be efficiently rendered within simulation platforms, allowing developers to digitally recreate roads, intersections and other driving environments at scale. Five AI will also apply diffusion-based AI models to modify and expand these reconstructed environments, enabling developers to generate variations in lighting, weather and other scene conditions. The combined approach is intended to significantly increase the number and diversity of test scenarios that can be created from captured real-world data, supporting more extensive evaluation of how automated driving systems respond to changing operating conditions. The technology is reportedly in initial development to support Level 2++ and Level 3 automated driving applications and is intended to work alongside other Bosch Mobility technologies as part of a broader simulation and validation platform. Five AI also expects the underlying approach to ultimately support the training and validation of Level 4 autonomous vehicle systems.

The simulation platform will use artificial intelligence to reconstruct photorealistic digital twins of real-world environments, generate additional driving scenarios and evaluate vehicle system responses within those environments. By enabling repeatable testing across conditions that may be difficult, costly or time-consuming to reproduce on public roads, simulation can complement physical vehicle testing while helping development teams evaluate substantially larger numbers of scenarios earlier in the engineering process. Real-world testing remains a critical component of autonomous vehicle development; however, within today’s automotive validation programs, the cost, time and practical limitations involved in physically collecting every possible combination of road, weather, traffic and environmental conditions have increased emphasis on the use of simulation tools. Photorealistic digital environments, when combined with AI-generated scenario variations, offer developers another method for expanding test coverage while maintaining repeatable and controlled evaluation conditions.

“This testing software will be an important cutting-edge innovation that will be developed by Five AI’s team,” said Dave Buffey, Head of Bosch Mobility UK. “Our strategy is to work closely with Five to solve the complex challenges that our car manufacturer partners are tackling as they incorporate the latest autonomous driving tech into their vehicles.”

As part of the UK Government’s £150 million CAM Pathfinder programme, the project supports the development, demonstration and commercialization of connected and automated mobility technologies. The programme is being delivered by the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade in partnership with Zenzic and Innovate UK, with Five AI’s project focused specifically on improving simulation capabilities for automated vehicle development and validation. UK Government grant funding remains subject to HMG approval.

About Five AI

Five AI is a Cambridge, UK-based artificial intelligence and automated driving technology company focused on software, simulation, verification, validation and safety assurance for advanced driver assistance and automated driving systems. Established in 2016, the company has developed expertise across cloud software, robotics, machine learning, autonomous systems and safety engineering, including experience gained through the development and public-road testing of autonomous vehicle technologies. Five AI was acquired by Robert Bosch GmbH in 2022 and is now part of Bosch Mobility. Its technology includes an integrated automated driving development and safety assurance platform designed to help automotive engineering teams develop, verify and validate ADAS and automated driving systems through simulation and analysis of real-world driving data. The platform supports creation and parameterization of varied traffic scenarios, large-scale simulation testing, rules-based system evaluation, regression testing and analysis of real-world vehicle data, helping development teams identify system weaknesses, increase test coverage and reduce dependence on costly physical test fleets.

As part of Bosch Mobility, Five AI is also contributing to the Automated Driving Alliance between Bosch and Volkswagen Group software company CARIAD. Five leads work related to the creation, management and evaluation of cloud-based simulation within the alliance’s standardized software development platform. The company’s continuing research spans artificial intelligence, machine learning, perception, object detection, trajectory planning, simulation and safety assurance for automated driving.
