About Southwest Research Institute (SwRI)

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is a nonprofit, independent R&D organization based in San Antonio, Texas. SwRI offers 4 • Sensors + Testing Monthlymultidisciplinary technical services, including additive manufacturing (AM) for custom packaging, mechanical housings, and functional components in electronic and electromechanical systems. Its AM capabilities span metals, polymers, and cementitious materials using techniques such as laser powder bed fusion, binder jetting, casting, and precision forming.

SwRI’s research portfolio includes support for early-stage prototyping, design for manufacturability, joining methods, and durability testing. The institute integrates its AM work with in-house robotics, systems engineering, and materials science expertise, enabling vertically integrated solutions for clients in defense, aerospace, electronics, and industrial systems. SwRI also contributes to government and industry standards development for AM qualification and certification.
