Starfighters Space, global industry experts in commercial supersonic flight operations, has announced that it is advancing the development of a reusable airborne platform designed to test sensors, aerodynamic articles, avionics and other aerospace technologies during sustained Mach 2+ flight. Known as Wind Tunnel in the Sky, the platform is being developed to give commercial, government, defense and research organizations access to real-world atmospheric conditions that cannot always be fully reproduced inside a ground-based test facility.
The company is designing a modular underwing platform for its operational fleet of F-104 supersonic aircraft. The platform is expected to accommodate different sensors, test articles and payloads, allowing customers to configure it for specific R&D requirements. Potential applications include the evaluation of aerodynamic test articles, avionics, communications systems, electronic equipment, advanced materials and sensing technologies for hypersonic programs and microgravity research.
Because Wind Tunnel in the Sky remains under development, its planned capabilities and mission profiles are forward-looking. Starfighters Space is designing it as a reusable testing platform with the goal of expanding commercial access to sustained supersonic test conditions. A typical 45-minute F-104 mission can include a Mach 2+ test window lasting up to 10 minutes. Starfighters Space said this can provide substantially longer exposure than traditional ground-based wind tunnel runs, which may last only seconds at a time. The company also expects the airborne approach to reduce the time associated with scheduling multiple facility-based tests by incorporating an extended test window into a single flight.

The platform is intended to complement rather than replace ground-based wind tunnels. Ground facilities allow researchers to control test variables, repeat specific conditions and collect detailed measurements within a structured environment. Airborne testing can add exposure to combinations of atmospheric variation, vibration, acceleration, dynamic pressure, temperature and operational conditions encountered during actual flight.
“As demand for hypersonic and advanced aerospace systems continues to grow, access to specialized test infrastructure remains limited, increasing demand for complementary commercial flight-test capabilities,” said Tim Franta, CEO of Starfighters Space. “While ground wind tunnels remain essential for aerospace research and development, airborne testing can expose hardware to combinations of weather variation, vibration, acceleration, dynamic pressure, temperature and operational conditions that cannot always be fully reproduced in a fixed facility.”
The underwing configuration is expected to expose test articles and sensors to high-speed airflow and changing atmospheric conditions during flight. Depending on the test configuration, the platform could support evaluation of aerodynamic response, sensor performance, electronic operation, communications behavior and material exposure under sustained supersonic conditions.
Starfighters Space is also designing the platform to support exposure to low-gravity conditions. This would broaden its potential use beyond supersonic aerodynamic testing to include microgravity research and the evaluation of technologies intended for future spaceflight applications.
Wind Tunnel in the Sky builds on the company’s previous subsonic and supersonic flight-testing work, including testing performed in support of its STARLAUNCH 1 demonstrator. Starfighters Space is developing STARLAUNCH as an air-launch system in which an F-104 serves as the first stage lifting platform for a payload. The company operates its F-104 fleet from NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida and is expanding operations at Midland International Air & Space Port in Texas. Starfighters Space describes the fleet as the world’s only commercial fleet of flight-ready Mach 2+ F-104 aircraft and reports that it is the only company offering commercial capability for sustained Mach 2+ aerospace applications.
As development progresses, Starfighters Space expects Wind Tunnel in the Sky to expand access to flight testing for next-generation aerospace, defense and space technologies. Its modular design is intended to allow the same airborne platform to support multiple payload types and R&D programs, providing an additional testing option for organizations developing hypersonic technologies, missile defense systems, sensors, advanced materials, communications equipment and spaceflight hardware.
