STMicroelectronics has released the IIS2DULPX, a new industrial-grade MEMS accelerometer, integrating edge AI, ultra-low power consumption, and support for extended operating temperatures to 105°C.The device is designed for predictive analysis via its compact, battery-powered sensor nodes, enabling high-performance condition monitoring and intelligent motion classification in industrial applications. These include asset tracking, robotics, factory automation, wearable safety devices, and portable healthcare equipment.

With an embedded machine-learning core (MLC), finite state machine (FSM), and adaptive self-configuration, the IIS2DULPX supports maintenance-free field deployment. These features allow the device to autonomously process motion events while reducing the workload on host processors and extending battery life.

“Our new IIS2DULPX accelerometer uniquely combines edge processing with ultra-low-power consumption and extended operating temperature range for the next generation of smart industrial sensors,” said Tarik Souibes, MEMS sub-group marketing director, STMicroelectronics. “With their on-chip intelligence, these accelerometers operate and adapt in real time to context, giving flexibility to adopt a deterministic algorithm or AI approach as best suited to the application.”

Typical use cases include event tracking for goods in transit, where the sensor may be used to classify motion such as dropping, shaking, tilting, or flipping. In factory automation and robotics, the device can be integrated into equipment to detect impacts or excessive vibration. Its compact footprint and energy efficiency allow for easy integration into both new and legacy systems.

Among ST’s early adopters is Finnish wireless monitoring company Treon. “We have just launched the Treon Industrial Node X, our long-lasting wireless condition-monitoring system, featuring the IIS2DULPX accelerometer, which we chose for its exceptional ultra-low power performance,” said Joni Korppi, CEO at Treon. “The intelligence embedded in this sensor enables the entire system to operate at extremely low power, achieving the battery duration we need. Moreover, its 10-year guaranteed market availability aligns perfectly with our product lifecycle requirements.” In the Treon system, the IIS2DULPX performs continuous monitoring of vibration levels with ultra-low power consumption, working in conjunction with an ST IIS3DWB high-performance vibration sensor to react to changes in vibration level and trigger more detailed measurements.

“With the Treon Industrial Node X, we have set a new standard in efficient, reliable, and long-lasting condition-monitoring solutions leveraging ST’s innovative MEMS sensors,” added Korppi.

The accelerometer is also used in smart safety helmets to detect impacts, falls, and unsafe usage. Its embedded MLC and FSM permit real-time monitoring with minimal energy consumption. In semiconductor manufacturing, the sensor has been integrated into battery-powered systems mounted on wafer-handling robots to detect vibration or shocks that may affect yield or long-term equipment reliability. These systems are designed to operate maintenance-free for over three years.

The IIS2DULPX supports full-scale sensing ranges from ±2g to ±16g, with output data rates from 1.6 Hz to 800 Hz. It is available now, priced from $1.57 for orders of 1,000 units.
