UL Solutions, global industry experts in applied safety science, recently opened a new automotive electromagnetic compatibility testing laboratory in Toyota City, Japan. The company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its Automotive Technology and Innovation Center on June 24, 2026. UL Solutions stated that laboratory operations would begin July 1.  The laboratory expands UL Solutions’ ability to support automakers and component suppliers as vehicles incorporate more electronic systems, higher operating voltages and faster processing technologies. Electromagnetic compatibility testing, commonly referred to as EMC testing, helps manufacturers evaluate whether electronic systems can operate as intended without causing or experiencing electromagnetic interference.

Electromagnetic interference can affect critical vehicle systems, including braking, steering and engine control. The increasing use of autonomous and software-defined vehicle architectures, high-voltage electrical systems, connected technologies and faster processing systems is creating more demanding EMC testing requirements across the automotive industry.

UL Solutions executives celebrate the June 24 ribbon cutting for the Automotive Technology and Innovation Center, a new automotive EMC testing laboratory in Toyota City, Japan.

The 2,322.58-square-meter facility, equivalent to approximately 25,000 square feet, is located in Japan’s Tokai region, a center of the country’s automotive industry. Its location is intended to provide manufacturers and suppliers with closer access to advanced EMC testing capabilities and technical expertise as they work through increasingly compressed vehicle development and validation schedules.

The facility is among a limited number of EMC laboratories in Japan equipped to perform high-voltage, high-current, high-torque and high-speed rotational testing. Its test chambers can support rotational speeds of up to 25,000 RPM and torque exceeding 3,500 Nm. Available power supplies can deliver up to 1,500 volts and 1,000 amps. These capabilities enable the laboratory to test passenger vehicles and high-voltage, high-current and high-power automotive electrical systems under demanding operating conditions. Testing can help manufacturers evaluate the electromagnetic behavior of individual components, subsystems and integrated vehicle technologies before products move into production or enter global markets.

Automotive EMC testing helps manufacturers demonstrate compliance with global standards, support market entry worldwide and reduce the risk of malfunctions caused by electromagnetic interference. Japan produced approximately 8.41 million vehicles in 2025, making it the world’s third-largest vehicle producer behind China and the United States. The country’s significant automotive manufacturing base and concentration of vehicle manufacturers and suppliers make the Tokai region an important location for expanded testing services.

The Automotive Technology and Innovation Center complements the UL Solutions Automotive Technology Center in Miyoshi City. Together, the facilities strengthen the company’s automotive EMC testing capabilities in Japan and form part of a broader laboratory network supporting customers across Asia, Europe and North America.

The Toyota City laboratory is designed to support the continued development of autonomous, electrified and software-defined vehicles, all of which depend on increasingly complex electronic architectures.
